Fossils, Families and Fun!
S6YOFOS (AGES 5 AND UP)
Back by popular demand! Take a day off work and enjoy a day with your family! Together, kids and adults will dig for (and definitely find!) fossils at the 15 million year-old fossil beds near Clarkia, Idaho. Using just a knife, you'll unearth and take home many specimens of plant fossils. Paleobotanist Bill Rember helps you interpret your finds. Bring a lunch and beverage, cheap pocket knife and a paper grocery sack for your items to take home. Travel is by UI van. Class size is limited.
Date: Wednesday, June 28, 10 a.m. –4 p.m. (approximately), 1 session Location: Meet the van at the west end of the Kibbie Dome Parking lot (next to Perimeter Dr.). Fee: $48 for one adult and one child
Calling All Actors! It's Showtime!
(ages 9–12) S6YOCAL
Are you ready for the spotlight? Come make your favorite stories come to life as you design your own show from start to finish. Parents! Do you have a real 'ham' at home? Let us help guide those dramatic energies, while putting an emphasis on improvisation. (Also, keep some time free to enjoy your child’s performance at the end of every week.) For your convenience, you may sign up for one, two or all three weeks!
Instructor: Donna Gwinn, with an extensive background in children's theatre and all aspects of theatre arts, specializes in improvisation for performance. Date: Monday–Thursday, 9–noon, 4 sessions per week

Kindermusik International has more than 25 years of experience creating curricula based on new and proven research in child development. Both parents and children will be directed through joyful activities using music and movement, leading parents to learn more about their child's unique developmental process while the child associates learning with fun, musical play. The CD's, games and instruments nurture skills for the whole child…cognitive, physical, social, emotional, and language.
Zoo Train! (ages 1–3) Your toddler and the train make a natural match–always on the move. Bring your own stuffed animals for the petting zoo. Wear long white socks on your hands for polar bear paws. Sing songs for clapping time and use music to help toddler regulate emotions. Explore with many different instruments and sounds.
Confetti Days! (ages 3–5)Throw a new party every day. Ride a carousel inside the classroom. Play a balancing game and walk on the web of ropes. Learn colors and sing the Spanish song “De Colores.” Do a musical move and freeze. At Home materials include: 5 picture folders each depicting a different theme, CD, story kit, and specially designed Confetti Bells.
Tell Me a Tale (ages 5–7) Through storytelling, your child will develop an early awareness of rhythm, movement, singing, and drama. Each lesson features a new tale from around the world, explored through multi-instrument and multi-cultural elements.
Instructor: Lori Germer, a teacher with 40 years' experience, has taught and loved Kindermusik for over 11 years. Date: Mondays & Thursdays, July 10–24. All 3 sections have 5 sessions.

This system of martial arts emphasizes personal development, not competition. Students learn basic martial arts skills in a fun, yet traditional atmosphere. Besides conditioning the body, karate training improves coordination, concentration, and self-confidence. Every student is able to advance at his/her own pace beyond the basic level. No uniforms or special equipment required. Advanced and Teens will meet with the UI Club which is open to anyone older than 16.
Instructor: Tim Daulton, a first-degree black belt, teaches the Washington State University and University of Idaho Shotokan Karate Clubs. (Offered in cooperation with Camp Fire) Are you looking for a worthwhile way to earn some money? This self-reliance babysitting course teaches you the necessary skills to become a capable babysitter. Through a combination of mini-lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on experiences, you learn basic child development; care and nurturing skills; safety measures; simple first aid; and job ethics. A certificate of completion is awarded at the end of the course. Please bring a sack lunch and drinks.

Parents! You may have the new Tiger (Tigress) Woods at home! Our junior golf camp is open for all ability levels and is divided by age/ability levels. Students learn all about course etiquette, full swing, and short game skills. Each session begins with basic instruction followed by on-course play. All instruction and supervision is provided by qualified University of Idaho staff. Class size is now limited, so please register early.

Knitting is once again 'hot' and we have just the class to help your young knitter get a great start. Students learn the basics including cast on, bind off, and knit and purl by completing a simple and beautiful project. Class enrollment is limited, so please register early. All supplies in the project kit may be purchased at the Needle Nook for approximately $20.

Here's the camp you've been waiting for! Come to Paradise Stables and learn all about the wonderful sport of horseback riding. Experience feeding, grooming, and saddling a horse plus learn about its anatomy and conformation and elementary veterinary care. You'll be instructed each day in both Western and English riding styles plus learn how to drive horses! Both beginning and intermediate riders are welcome. Please wear long pants and shoes or boots (no sandals). A signed release form must be completed at the first session by a parent or legal guardian. Enrollment is limited, so please register early.

Around the World in Just 3 Days!

Who is Loki? What is Cubism? Where is cocoa from? How do you play Pesek? What is Wali Wa Nazi and what does it taste like? How do you write a sonnet? Learn the answers to all of these questions and more while experienceing other cultures and peoples through mythology, food, art, music and games. This interactive class fully engages the senses as we travel the world together while dancing, writing, drawing, and more. Please bring an $8 supply fee on the first day of class.

Reaching New Heights! Climbing for Teens
(ages 12–15) S6YOREA
Here is a great opportunity to spend three full days experiencing rock climbing in a relaxed, safe, educational environment with an emphasis on teamwork and personal growth. Learn skills basic to the sport of rock climbing from experienced instructors at the University of Idaho's Climbing Center. We start with a team building exercise to get to know your fellow climbers then on to basic climbing skills at the center's 55 foot climbing wall. On the third day we move outdoors to a local rock climbing site to experience rock climbing in its natural setting!!

Linking Math and the Real World Through Art
(girls ages 10–13) S4YOLIN
Young ladies, let your creative side lead the way through explorations of spatial relationships. Explore flips (reflections), turns (rotations), and slides (translations) through tessellations and kaleidoscopes and develop visual skills. Using these new skills and patterns both through hands-on activities and computers, we will also solve real world problems. For example, we'll investigate efficient cutting methods in quilt designs and finding the shortest path between objects. This class is designed for middle school girls to investigate mathematics using art, hands-on explorations, and computers in a cooperative setting. Supply fee built into cost of the class.
Instructor: Kimberly Vincent, an instructor in the WSU Dept. of Mathematics, has many years' experience developing and teaching workshops for both teachers and children. She has recently researched inclusive teaching for mathematics. Sew What's Up! Hand Sewing for Young Children

Young children can increase fine motor skills and concentration while creating something they will love! Your young seamstress will learn basic sewing techniques while making a doll from scratch. Buttons, seam construction, stuffing and embellishment will all be explored and you will go home with your very own starter sewing kit. All materials are provided (a $5 materials fee will be collected first class), but fabric may be brought from home if desired.
Instructor: Jennifer Whitney has 15 years of sewing experience and, even with formal university instruction, fondly remembers the time spent sewing with her grandmother best of all! Are you ready for the challenge of creating with a sewing machine? Join us and experience the satisfaction of making a decorative pillow and pillowcase. We'll examine how sewing machines work and how they are used. Cutting techniques, seam construction and pressing are just a few of the topics we'll cover. A supply list will be mailed prior to class (cost of supplies approximately $10–$15).

Here's a great opportunity for that young dancer in the family to try something new! Hula is a beautiful dance form where students learn chants, movements and gestures that tell a story based on Hula music and songs. We'll also incorporate some basic ballet and dance drill movements. Parents! For those of you who need child care prior to our 9:30 a.m. class, you may choose Option 2 that meets at 7:30 a.m. A $10 hula kit is purchased from the instructor at the first session. Please bring water and a snack (easy clean-up please) to class. Parents, friends, and relatives are invited to observe the dancers perform on Friday, July 29 at 11:30 am. Aloha!
