Aikido

Aikido is a modern martial art rooted in ancient
Japanese traditions. In Aikido we learn to defend
ourselves without injuring our partner or opponent.
Aikido means “the way of harmony with the life
force”. Physically, Aikido employs the efficient use of
available forces, emphasizing relaxation and being
centered. Psychologically, Aikido involves reframing
the elements of an attack allowing us to deal with the
energy of threat and aggression. Wear comfortable,
loose fitting clothing.
Instructor: Eric Wegner and Joe Vaughan have many
years’ experience training and instructing in Aikido
and other martial arts. Date: Mondays & Wednesdays, May 22–July 12 (no

Here’s a class to help both your physical and mental
health. This workout combines deep breathing
techniques, abdominal (core) exercises, deep
stretches, concentration on inner/outer thigh and a
meditating cool-down for an overall feeling of wellbeing.
Students work with balls and bands. This class
targets overall abdomnials and legs with some light
upper body workout. The benefits of this approach
include greater body awareness and increased
strength (core and legs) and flexibility. Wear loose,
comfortable clothing for ease of movement and come
with bare feet.
Instructor: Julie Strobel, with 17 years of professional
experience in teaching health and dance classes,
choreographs dances for all ages and has been
involved with the UI Dance Theatre; Dancers,
Drummers and Dreamers; and has guest taught for
numerous studios, fitness clubs and universities. Date: Mondays & Wednesdays, May 24–August 9
(no classes 5/29,7/3, 5, 24 & 26), 5:30–6:30 p.m.,

includes cardio, calisthenics, and Pilates. Students

Have you always been interested in yoga, but afraid
to try it? Yoga can reduce stress, improve flexibility,
posture, awareness and acceptance - starting with
where you are right now! This class is perfect for
beginners or for those with some familiarity and who
would like to make their practice more personalized
and rewarding. Poses begin at the gentle/moderate
level and adjust to the needs of the group. Each class
includes deep relaxation and/or guided meditation
tailored to participants needs.
Instructor: Andrea Bussinger, a certified Yoga teacher
through Integrative Yoga Therapy, teaches workshops
and classes in the Moscow-Pullman area. Date: Thursdays, June 1–July 6, 5:15–6:45 p.m., 6

Weight lifting, using either free weights or machine
weights, has numerous health benefits, including
increased muscle strength and endurance, and
increased bone density. Participants learn proper
techniques of weight lifting, and how to structure
a personal lifting program. This course is a great
opportunity to learn the basics of weight training and how
it fits into a total wellness plan. Regardless of athletic
ability, every woman can benefit from weight training.
Instructor: Theresa Carter, with 18 years’ experience
as a high school health and physical education
teacher, has taught weightlifting for 12 of those years
and brings to class a mixture of knowledge, energy
and passion for wellness! Date: Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays, June
12–July 13 (no class 7/3, 4, & 6), 9:30–10:30 a.m.,

Join us for a two-day seminar featuring enthusiastic,
joyful practice of Aikido, the non-competitive ‘art of
peace’ with Christine Dyer, Sensei. A 4th dan and
a member of the Aikido Association of America
Teaching Committee, Christine Dyer emphasizes
making Aikido accessible to everyone through
teaching efficient movement and precise techniques.
Dyer Sensei instructs at Chushinkan Dojo in Buena
Park, CA where she trains with and assists James
Nakayama, 6th dan, AAA Western Region Director.
She will demonstrate, explain, and lead practice
in aiki taiso (body movement basics), tai sabaki
(strategic positioning), kihon waza (basic techniques),
kata (weapons forms), and bokken-tori or jo-tori
(weapon taking technique). This seminar conveys
the essence of Aikido as embodied in intermediate
level techniques taught by AAA founder Fumio Toyoda
(1947-2001). Students should bring their own training
weapons if possible, specifically jo (short staff) and
bokken (wooden sword). Aikido students and other
martial artists with basic skills in ukemi (taking falls)
are warmly invited to attend. As this seminar is
not appropriate to those without ukemi skills, such
interested persons should consider the regular Aikido
class listed in this brochure.

Linda for her 12th annual herb walk in the
Moscow area and learn practical tips like
identifying the plant parts and times of the
year in which to gather. Go home feeling
confident with your ability to identify and
use safe, edible, wild weeds and common
first aid plants. Participants should dress
appropriately for the weather. Class will car
caravan to walk location.
